Traffic Violations that Commonly Lead to Crashes

When a driver violates traffic laws, they can be automatically found negligent in a civil lawsuit against them. Traffic laws exist to protect all motorists on the road, and drivers endanger others when they fail to follow them. Here are some of the most common traffic violations that cause accidents.

Speeding

In 2019, speeding was a factor in more than one in every four road fatalities. When drivers go too fast for the road conditions (and this could even be under the speed limit), they are less able to respond to hazards and challenges. They are also less able to control their cars.

Illegal Turns

Making a left-hand turn can be treacherous, especially at a busy intersection. Drivers must yield to oncoming traffic when there is no red light. However, many drivers without the right-of-way will proceed anyway. Even drivers making a right turn on red may not yield to traffic.

Running Stop Signs and Red Lights

These are often the most dangerous car accidents because they happen as t-bone crashes – when the front of one driver’s car hits the broad side of another driver’s vehicle. These crashes often happen at full speed because the driver who is hit is not anticipating that another driver will run the red light.

Reckless Driving

It goes without saying that a driver who meets the legal definition of reckless is a danger to everyone else. One in every three car accident fatalities is caused by reckless driving. The injuries associated with these crashes are far more severe.
